Dan says bye to Fulford!

As many of you would have gathered by now, my assistant Dan is moving to Richmond Golf Club in North Yorkshire as the Head professional. Dan has had nearly six years here Fulford and he would like to pass on his thanks to all of the club’s members past and present on making his employment most enjoyable. He leaves on good terms and would like to think if you’re ever in the Richmond area to call in for a game. I’m sure you will join me and wish him all the best in his new role.

Junior Get into golf session

This Saturday (19th May) we will be conducting a junior get into golf session from 9am-10am. This session is for anyone looking to give golf a try and is completely FREE. We will supply all the equipment. If you would like a member of your family or friends to take part, then please contact us on 01904 412882 to reserve a place.

Mr Captain needs your support!

Starting at 05:30am on Sunday 1st July, our Captain Paul Hemlin will attempt to play 72 holes of golf in one day for charity!

He needs your help in either volunteering to take part in the challenge to fundraise for this year’s Captain’s Charity which is Dreamflight; or with your generosity in sponsoring him please.

Dreamflight is a UK based charity that has been operating for over 30 years and Paul has put their details throughout the clubhouse.

For those wanting to take part in the challenge there is a sign-up sheet on the Captain’s Board.

May Monthly Medal

On Sunday we had this month’s Monthly Medal. With the weather holding up it turned out to be a great day for scoring. Coming in second place this time was Steve Daniel with a great nett 68, and this month’s winner with a fantastic nett 67 was Geoff Stericker. Congratulations Geoff and keep up the good form.

Fulford Greensomes

On Bank Holiday Monday we held the annual Fulford Greensomes, this is a prestigious event being a board competition and one everyone wants to win. This year’s winners and making their way onto the board was Karl Martin and Richard Cunningham. They scored a great 66.6 in a format where both players need to play well to have a chance at a good score. Well done guys.

Playing out of a divot

While we would encourage all golfers to practice every shot they might need, there are some situations you find yourself in that your practice has probably never covered, such as playing out of a divot.

How to escape a divot
The secret to making good contact from a divot is hitting down on the ball. So move it back a few inches in your stance and put more weight on your front foot, like a punch shot. These two actions promote a steeper swing that encourages you to catch the ball first and drive it out successfully. Don’t try anything else special, just commit to the shot.

If your ball is sitting right at the back of the divot, you’ll still need to concentrate on striking ball before turf, but you won’t need to swing quite so steeply to get it airborne.

What's your go-to club?

Some rounds our driver is our best friend, consistently finding the fairway and not putting us into any trouble off the tee. Other rounds, however, it’s a completely different story as we find ourselves anywhere but the fairway. On rounds like the latter, it’s important to have a ‘go-to’ safety club you can use from the tee.

What’s your fairway finder?
Having too many options isn’t always a good thing in golf because sometimes you’ll find it hard to fully commit to a shot. Having said that, it’s important to have an alternative option in your armoury – such as a fairway wood – that you can trust to keep you in play when it matters.
