2018 Carris Trophy Wow what a week we have just had. Firstly, we would like to thank the Fulford greenkeepers and all our volunteers who made the week so special. The course was in immaculate condition and the volunteers did the name of Fulford very proud. Well done guys. Monday was practice day and by what we saw from the 1st tee it was going to be a low scoring week, these lads could hit some good balls. Tuesday was the opening round of the tournament and the big news of the day was that George Robson our junior captain had made it into the competition and was teeing off at 1pm. The pace had been set by Joe Sullivan shooting the round of day -6 to lead the competition. George responded with a fantastic round of -1 which put him T6th at the end of the first day’s play. Wednesday and George was out early, after a struggle on the first few holes he battled his way to a +4 and finish +3 after 2 rounds. The round of the day came from England’s Josh Hill who manged a brilliant -7 round to make his way into a 4-way tie for the lead alongside Joe Sullivan, Simone Armando Colozza and Alessio Battista.
The half way cut of top 60 players fell on +5 which meant our man George was safely through to the final 36 holes. With some good scoring conditions, it was out there for the taking. Gregorio de Leo was the one who made the move, he shot a round of -7 to get his 54-hole total to -9 just 2 shots ahead of Sheffield’s Barclay Brown who carded a -4. Fulford’s George shot a +4 to bring his total to +7 for 54 holes. The final round was gearing up to be a good one with plenty of spectators turning out to watch the boys. Unfortunately, in the morning we had a lightning storm which brought back the tee times by 2.5hours. When play eventually got underway the course was a little bit softer than previous days and this showed in scoring. Junior Captain George shot +9 to finish his total on +16 and finish 58th for the competition. Well done George we bet that was a great experience for you and it will help you when you enter big competitions in the future. As for the leaders, it was getting very close down the closing stretch between Barclay Brown and Gregorio de Leo. With two holes to play Barclay was one behind, however a fantastic putt on 17 gave him a birdie to pull level with Gregorio. Going down the last and Barclay played it safe with an iron while Gregorio went aggressive. Gregorio found the second bunker and Barclay found the fairway. Barclay then hit another iron just off the green while Gregorio had to pitch out. Gregorio hit his wedge to about 15ft, so the advantage was Barclays. He managed to hit is chip stone dead and tap it in for a birdie. Meanwhile Gregorio unfortunately missed his birdie chance to crown Barclay as this years Carris Trophy winner. Congratulations Barclay from all of us here at Fulford Golf Club.
