Finals Weekend Over the weekend, despite the weather and the bunkers being out of play, a few of the club matchplay finals took place. First, it was the big one, the Club Championship. This was between Tom Kelly and Will Pepper. 36-holes off scratch and from the blue tees was always going to be a challenge. After the first round, Tom Kelly was four up on Will after having seven birdies in the round. All he had to do was keep up the good form and the trophy was his. This is exactly what he did, and he went on to win 6&4, a big congratulations goes to Tom and to Will for a great final. |

Also, being played on the Saturday was the Mixed Foursomes Final, which was between Matt Kelly playing with daughter Hannah and Graeme Wood playing with wife Sharon. Despite giving a few shots to the Woods, the Kelly’s triumphed 4&3, congratulations guys. Saturday was the day for the Kelly’s. |

On Sunday, the finals weekend continued, this time with the Wills trophy. This is Scratch Foursomes and the final was between Sam and Will Pepper against Steven Greenwood and Chris Brownlee. This match turned out to be a close affair with Will and Sam coming out just on top with a 2&1 victory, well done to the Peppers on a great win, we will see you at prize giving evening. On the Sunday afternoon, Jodie Himsworth and Marianne Miller also played in the Lady’s Victory Cup Final. It was a tight start but after the first nine holes, it saw Jodie in control as she was four up through nine. Jodie stayed in control, as by the 14th she won 6&4. It was a tough match over all, as Marianne and Jodie were both playing well, and it took a while for either one to gain a lead. Big well done to Jodie and to Marianne for a challenging final. |
Before the Victory Cup Final, we had our Junior Silver Jubilee Final with Elliot Williams and Hannah Kelly battling it out to try and win the trophy. Seeing as a girl has never won the trophy before, Hannah had all intention to take Elliot to the end which she did as they took a turn to the first tee again. They both played fantastically well but Elliot holed a putt on the last to seal the deal. Congratulations Elliot for a great win and commemoration to Hannah as she took it to the end and didn’t give up without a fight. |

Yorkshire Counties Members Day On Wednesday, we held a Yorkshire members competition, this was run by Yorkshire Golf and it was a pairs competition with the best score to count on each hole. With the whole day booked out, it was going to take a very good score to win. As it happens, an exceptional score was required to win, this was achieved by our very own Peter Huddlestone and Selby’s John Shaw with 49 points. Baring in mind both these guys are playing off a handicap of five, that is an incredible score to win by three shots. Congratulations guys. |
Ladies East Riding Alliance Pro-Am On Thursday at Easingwold Golf Club, the Ladies East Riding Alliance Pro-Am was played. We had a few teams representing us, one of them consisted of Charlotte Austwick, Gillie Allison, Alison Hughes and Janet Lawn. This team went on to win the competition with a score of 137 with another of our teams coming in third place with consisted of George Forder, Liz Burns, Pam Clancey and Marianne Miller. Well done to all who played. |

Comeback complete At the start of the year, 14-time Major winner Tiger Woods was ranked 1,199th in the world, following a fourth back surgery amid fears that he might never be able to compete on a golf course again. Fast-forward nine months and Woods has completed what will go down as one of the finest comeback seasons across sporting history.
Now ranked 13th in the world, he topped off a remarkable year with his first victory since 2013 at the TOUR Championship, finishing second in the FedEx Cup and has once again shown that he may be the most talented golfer to ever play the game (we'll save that debate for another time). Particularly striking was the control Woods had over the whole tournament. Leading from start-to-finish, he never once looked as if he was going to lose his composure, sailing serenely through the final round whilst the likes of Justin Rose and Rory McIlroy crumbled under the pressure. The Big Cat is truly back. A gutsy birdie on the 72nd hole saw Justin Rose finish in T-4, which was good enough to see him crowned FedEx Cup champion, the first Englishman to do so, and in the process taking home a tidy sum of $10m (£7.6m). Not too shabby! |
The wait is over Whilst another season on the PGA Tour has come to an end, there is still the small matter of the Ryder Cup to be settled. One of the questions which still remains on both sides is the nature of the pairings. Team Europe is made up of five Ryder Cup rookies, meaning that captain Thomas Bjorn will need to make sure he pairs some of them up with more experienced players. The likes of Tyrrell Hatton, who exudes self-confidence, may thrive in the cauldron of the Ryder Cup, but nothing is a certainty in this tournament. For Team USA, the issue of first-timers is less pronounced with only three rookies in the line-up; they include Justin Thomas, who already has a Major to his name, and Bryson DeChambeau, who has been in sparkling form of late. DeChambeau’s physics-orientated approach to the game may come under pressure from the home fans, so may need a veteran such as Phil Mickelson to guide him through his round. The first tee shot will be struck at 7:10am (GMT) this Friday, so make sure you set your alarm nice and early. For the first time ever, the world's top 10 will all be playing in the tournament, so it’s going to be a cracker.
Who do you think will come out on top; Team Europe or Team USA? Click here to let us know. |
It's all about the landing zone |
When you’re faced with a chip shot, visualisation is key but often overlooked. In order to judge your chip accurately, you need to be able to picture where you want the ball to land and how much it will roll out from this point. Being able to achieve this requires a lot of practice, but you'll soon see your touch around the greens improving. |
Landing Zone Drill Here’s a simple way of helping you land your chips exactly where you want to every time. The next time you’re at the practice green, take a folded towel and place it at the spot you want your ball to land. Then, when you hit your chips, try and make the ball land on the towel. To ramp up the difficulty, try reducing the size of the towel. |
This drill will improve your touch and mean that the next time you visualise your chip shots, you’ll be confident you can execute them to perfection. Another thing to try is moving the towel (i.e. landing spot) closer and further away from you so you get an idea of how far each club rolls out.
