Archie Sorrell

On Saturday, we held the Archie Sorrell Trophy. Even though the weather was glorious once again, it was showing some difficulty to play in, however, that didn’t stop Richard Cass taking the chance to win the trophy with a fantastic score of 40 points. With only one point separating first and second place, Isaac Green just missed out with another fantastic score of 39 points. well done guys. Great scoring.

Alongside the Archie Sorrell Trophy on Saturday, was the ladies June Medal. Once again there were some fantastic scores bearing in mind the conditions were not the easiest. Taking the top spot was Alex Bonfield who shot and fantastic gross 73 for as nett 68. Alex has been playing some incredible golf recently and we’re sure it is going to keep progressing throughout the summer. Well done Alex! Tracey Maddison also shot another fantastic score of a nett 70, alongside Anne Swannell with a nett 74. A massive well done to all the ladies who played.

Putting things right

Sometimes, it's the most obvious things that get overlooked. When it comes to golf, the club most used in a round is a putter so surely it's the part of the game that deserves most attention?

We know this isn't a reality for many, but a combination of working hard on your stroke and having a putter that is suited to your stroke type will certainly improve your chances on the greens - two things that this promotion is all about.

Reading between the lines

One of the hardest things in golf is green reading; it is also something that the majority of golfers never learn how to do properly. So, without giving away all the secrets, here are some handy tips to help keep you on track and hole more putts.

High and low

Prior to reaching the green, take note of the high and low points of the surface and where your ball lies in respect to these. This will help you to build a general picture before reaching your ball.

360 picture

If you’re struggling to read which way your putt breaks from behind the ball, try walking around to the other side of the hole as this can often highlight any breaks you may have missed or reaffirm your original read.

Are you focusing on the wrong thing?

As soon as the ball has left the putter face, we know whether it’s going to be good or not. It’s like a sixth sense, right? But what constitutes a good putt? Many golfers let the final outcome decide this – i.e. whether the ball ends up in the hole or not – but that is arguably well out of our control. So, perhaps it's time to refocus on what we can control?

There are only two things we can really control when it comes to putting. The first is starting the ball on the correct line. Take Tiger Woods for example; the 15-time major winner focuses on a blade of grass he wants the ball to roll over immediately in front of him, which brings the intended target much closer to impact.

The second is getting the ball rolling correctly, which means imparting top spin as quickly as possible after impact rather than having it jumping and skidding in the air.

One way to control our putting is by utilising the technology in PING’s stunning Vault 2.0 putters.
